FNSSP - First Nation Student Success Program

First Nation Student Success Program

“The First Nation Student Success Program (FNSSP)is part of an overarching commitment of the Government of Canada to set the foundation for long-term reform of First Nation education.”

This is a proposal driven initiative for which four of the Yellowhead Tribal Council Bands (Alexander, Alexis, O’Chiese and Sunchild) applied to receive funding. The three main areas of focus are literacy, numeracy and student retention.

The following are goals of the O’Chiese Education Authority:

  • Decrease student dropout rates.
  • Improve and increase high school credit completion and graduation rates.
  • Increase all students confidence and ability to read and write (literacy)
  • Increase all students confidence and ability in math (numeracy).
  • Development and running of Saulteaux Language and Cultural Programming.
  • Development and running of fine arts, career/work experience, and physical education.
  • Establish Library services.

HEROES Program

"Our vision is to see teens filled with confidence, hope, character, respect, and passion instead of fear, anger, or apathy. That's why we offer HEROESTM - a fun, experiential-learning program with amazing outcomes."

In classes and throughout the school, students will learn effective ways to prevent bullying and encourage caring for one another.

Saulteaux Culture and 7 Sacred Teachings

All students attend Saulteaux classes to ensure the language is kept alive and vibrant. As well, cultural activities and crafts are being pursued (beading, dancing, regalia making, drumming, singing, & large scale tipi). Throughout the year students practice, experience, and celebrate the 7 Native teachings during school wide projects, monthly assemblies, and in class connections.

Live to Read... Read to Live

Students who are below reading level are receiving one on one support. So far our students are feeling very happy about becoming better readers. We have purchased many new books and are getting our LIBRARY up and running!

Marvellous Math

To improve our students math levels, teachers have tested students and are now building on their strengths and working to improve their areas of struggle.

Encouraging kids to stay in school (RETENTION) is an ongoing initiative and we welcome suggestions, encouragement, and support. So far, to engage our learners we are doing projects like a Youth Leadership conference with YTC schools, Talent Show, Parental Engagement Events, and Technology infusion into classrooms.
